A Tale of Vodka, Ginger Beer, and Copper Mugs: The Birth of the Moscow Mule

Our story begins in the early 1940s in the United States. At the time, vodka was an underappreciated spirit, often sidelined for more popular choices like whiskey and gin. However, John G. Martin, a spirits and food distributor who had recently bought the rights to Smirnoff, was determined to popularize vodka in America.

Enter Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock ‘n’ Bull tavern on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, who had his own predicament – an overstock of house-made ginger beer. A chance meeting between the two men sparked the genesis of a new cocktail that would utilize both vodka and ginger beer.

And so, the Moscow Mule was born, served uniquely in a copper mug, a nod to another partner in this venture, Sophie Berezinski, who had a stock of copper mugs she’d been struggling to sell.

The name, ‘Moscow Mule’, was as clever as the cocktail itself. ‘Moscow’ linked the drink to its primary spirit, vodka, which was associated with Russia. The ‘Mule’, on the other hand, is a term used in cocktail lingo for drinks made with ginger beer and citrus.

The Moscow Mule took 1940’s Hollywood by storm.

The Traditional Moscow Mule Recipe: Simplicity at Its Best

There’s an elegant simplicity in the Moscow Mule, a harmony of just three ingredients that create a refreshing and invigorating cocktail. The tangy ginger beer, the sharpness of the lime, and the smoothness of the vodka come together for a taste experience that’s truly unique.

There’s an elegant simplicity in the Moscow Mule recipe, a harmony of just three ingredients that create a refreshing and invigorating cocktail. The tangy ginger beer, the sharpness of the lime, and the smoothness of the vodka come together for a taste experience that’s truly unique.

Here is the most traditional recipe for the Moscow Mule:

Preparation Time: 5 minutes Serving: Makes 1 cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 6 ounces ginger beer
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Lime wheel and mint sprig, for garnish
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Fill a copper mug with ice cubes.
  2. Pour in the vodka and lime juice.
  3. Top with ginger beer and stir gently to mix.
  4. Garnish with a wheel of lime and a sprig of mint.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing taste of a classic Moscow Mule.

Dancing with the Mule: Common Variations of the Moscow Mule

What makes the Moscow Mule even more charming is its adaptability. With a solid base of ginger beer and lime, the cocktail lends itself beautifully to a range of variations. Here are a few popular ones:

Kentucky Mule

Swap out the vodka for some good old bourbon, and you’ve transported your mule from Moscow to Kentucky. The depth and warmth of the bourbon make this a great option for cooler weather.

Mexican Mule

Replace vodka with tequila for a south-of-the-border twist to your Mule. The fiery spirit pairs surprisingly well with the ginger beer.

Garden Mule

Add a botanical touch to your mule with some cucumber and mint. Muddle a few slices of cucumber and a couple of mint leaves in your mug before adding the rest of the ingredients.

Caribbean Mule

If you’re a fan of rum, then the Caribbean Mule is for you. Substitute the vodka for a dark or spiced rum to give your mule a tropical touch.

Irish Mule

Substitute the vodka with Irish whiskey to create the Irish Mule. The smoothness of the whiskey pairs delightfully with the zing of ginger beer.

Aussie Mule

Replace vodka with Bundaberg Rum (or any Australian rum) for an Aussie twist on this classic cocktail.

Scottish Mule

Swap the vodka for Scotch whisky. The smoky flavor of the Scotch adds a unique depth to the cocktail.

Each of these variations follows the same simple preparation method as the traditional Moscow Mule – just swap out the vodka for your spirit of choice and follow the same steps.

Ginger Beer VS Ginger Ale: Same Thing?

Ginger beer and ginger ale are different beverages, Both are non-alcoholic beverages and share a common ingredient – ginger – but they differ in taste, brewing process, and flavor profiles.

What is Ginger Beer? Originally, ginger beer was fermented and brewed, which sometimes resulted in a slight alcoholic content. Today, most commercial ginger beers are non-alcoholic, but they still undergo a brewing and fermentation process, which gives them a robust, spicy, and strong ginger flavor. Ginger beer is the traditional choice for a Moscow Mule, as its distinctive kick of spice pairs beautifully with vodka and lime.

And Ginger Ale? This is a milder, sweeter carbonated beverage, which does not undergo a brewing process. The ginger flavor in ginger ale is less intense, making it a lighter and sweeter alternative to ginger beer.

While you can technically make a Moscow Mule with ginger ale, the result will be a much sweeter and less spicy drink. For the authentic, traditional experience, ginger beer is the way to go.
